Every February and early March, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras fills the city with visitors, parties and events, ending with the parade along Oxford Street and Flinders Street. If you are visiting for the festival, book ahead. Companions in Darlinghurst, Surry Hills and Potts Point are within walking distance of the parade route, but on parade night streets close from the afternoon, buses are diverted and taxis queue for a long time.
