Working With Agencies Versus Going Independent
Agencies and independent work each have advantages. Understanding the trade-offs helps you choose the path that suits you.
Many providers work with an agency at some point in their career, while others prefer complete independence from the start. Neither path is right for everyone, and understanding the trade-offs helps you make a considered choice.
What an agency can offer
A reputable agency may handle advertising, enquiries, bookings, screening and administration, and may provide a working location. For newcomers, that support can make the first months less daunting and help them learn how the industry works.
What independence offers
Independent providers set their own rates, hours, services and policies, and keep all of their income after expenses. They build their own brand and client base. In exchange, they carry every responsibility: marketing, screening, safety, bookkeeping and client communication.
Questions to ask an agency
How are clients screened and by whom? What share of each booking does the agency keep, and what exactly does that cover? What are the expectations around availability and presentation? How is your personal information stored and protected? Can you decline a booking without penalty? Clear, confident answers are a good sign.
Questions to ask yourself
Do you enjoy marketing and administration, or would you rather focus solely on bookings? How comfortable are you managing your own safety arrangements? How much control do you want over your schedule and services? How much time can you realistically spend on the business side?
Consider a mix
Some providers work with an agency while building an independent profile, or move between the two as their circumstances change. Your choice does not have to be permanent.
Check the legal framework
The legal position of agencies, independent work and shared premises varies between states and territories. Make sure any arrangement you enter complies with the rules where you work.
Whichever route you choose, make it a deliberate decision that suits your goals rather than a default.
