How to Set Your Rates With Confidence
Pricing is part business decision and part self-respect. A clear method helps you choose rates you can explain, defend and grow into.
Setting your rates can feel uncomfortable, especially when you are new. Yet pricing is simply a business decision, and like any business decision it becomes much easier once you have a method you trust.
Start with your costs
Before looking at anyone else's rates, add up what it actually costs you to work. Include advertising, travel, accommodation when touring, clothing, grooming, phone and internet, supplies and the hours you spend on administration. Divide that total by the number of hours you realistically want to work each month. The result is the minimum you need to charge simply to break even.
Look at the market, but do not copy it
Research what providers with a similar style, experience and location charge. This gives you a sensible range. Where you sit within that range depends on what makes your service distinctive: your presentation, communication, reliability and the atmosphere you create. Copying the lowest price in your area rarely attracts the clients you most want.
Price the experience, not just the time
Two bookings of the same length can involve very different amounts of energy and preparation. Dinner dates, social events and overnight stays require planning, wardrobe and availability that a short booking does not. It is reasonable for your rates to reflect that rather than simply multiplying an hourly figure.
Be consistent and transparent
Publish your rates clearly and apply them consistently. Constant negotiation is tiring and suggests that your prices are only a starting point. If you offer a discount, make it deliberate, such as a set rate for regular clients or for longer bookings, rather than something anyone can bargain for.
Review your rates regularly
Costs rise, skills improve and demand changes. Review your pricing every six to twelve months. When you increase your rates, give regular clients reasonable notice. Most will understand, and those who value your time will stay.
Remember the value of your time off
Rates that are too low push you into working more hours than is healthy, and burnout is expensive. A sustainable price lets you rest, plan and enjoy your work, which in turn makes you better at it.
Confident pricing is not arrogance. It is a clear statement that your time, skill and wellbeing are worth protecting.
