Agency Nights: Notes From the Booking Board

A Canberra agency companion writes about the rhythm of a busy agency week, the support that comes with it, and why she chose a team over going it alone.

Agency Nights: Notes From the Booking Board

People ask me why I work through an agency instead of independently, as if one is obviously better. For me, right now, the agency is the right fit, and this week reminded me why.

Monday

Checked in with the booker by text at noon. She runs the board like an air traffic controller: calm, precise, never flustered. She knows my availability, my boundaries, the types of bookings I prefer and the ones I don't take, and she screens every client before their name ever reaches me. When I started, that was the thing that made me feel safe enough to try this work at all. It still is.

Tuesday

Two bookings, both hotel outcalls in the city. Parliament is sitting, so the hotels are full of people in lanyards who look exhausted. I won't say more than that about who they were, because discretion is the whole business, but I will say they were polite and grateful and both said they'd rebook through the agency.

The driver waited out front both times. I texted "in" and "out," and he texted a thumbs up. That small exchange is worth more than I can say.

Wednesday

Day off. Went to the gallery by the lake and stood in front of the big abstract paintings for an hour. Nobody knew who I was. Nobody needed anything from me. Bliss.

Thursday

Tricky moment. A client arrived at the hotel room clearly having had too much to drink, which is against agency policy. I followed the procedure we all know by heart: polite, calm, and out the door. I rang the office from the lift, the driver was already at the entrance, and the booker handled the rest. I didn't have to argue with anyone. That's what the structure is for.

Friday

Staff catch-up at the office. Pizza, a quick run-through of new policies, a reminder about health checks, and a lot of laughing. There are seven of us on the books at the moment and we have a group chat that is mostly photos of our pets. I've made real friends here.

What I'd tell someone deciding

Independent work gives you more control and a bigger share of the fee. Agency work gives you screening, drivers, admin, marketing and company, in exchange for a cut. Neither is the right answer for everyone. I might go independent one day. For now, I like having a team behind me when the phone rings at midnight.
