The law in New South Wales, in general terms

New South Wales takes a different approach from most of the world. Adult sex work is treated much like other lawful work: selling or buying consensual adult services is not a crime in itself, and businesses are regulated through ordinary rules rather than a special licensing system. For clients, that means a booking with an adult who has freely agreed to it is lawful, and the people you meet are workers with the same rights as anyone else.

Where premises can operate is decided by local councils through planning approvals, and the rules differ from one council area to the next. Workplaces are also covered by the state's work health and safety laws, and many venues set out clear policies on hygiene and conduct.

Some things remain serious crimes everywhere: forcing or pressuring anyone into sex work, and ignoring someone's refusal. If you ever suspect a person is not working freely, leave and report it to the police. Rules in other states are different, so what holds in Sydney may not apply in Brisbane or Perth.

This is general information only and not legal advice. Sydney escorts and their clients with a specific question should speak to a lawyer or a sex worker organisation. Browse escorts in Sydney.
